Damp & Water Proofing is the application of a water-resisting treatment or material to the surface of a concrete or masonry wall to prevent passage or absorption of water or moisture. The wrong diagnosis and identification of the source of such damp may well result in not only recurring damage but also unnecessary costs. CIP | Causes of structural dampness
Rising damp
Caused by moisture rising up from the ground into walls of a building and evaporates internally. If left unattended the structure joint work may be damaged which will in turn endanger the structural stability of the building. Common symptoms are flaking paint, peeling wallpaper, peeling plaster, musty odour, and timber decay.
Lateral damp
Occurs when moisture penetrates a substrate horizontally rather than vertically. Common symptoms are flaking paint, peeling wallpaper, musty odour, and timber decay.
Penetrating damp
Usually associated with face brick buildings where either the bricks are very porous due to ineffective manufacture or the mortar between the bricks has deteriorated. Common symptoms are musty odour, timber decay, and fungal growth.
